Yu Hong Mei - Erhu Chant (2006)

On this CD, Yu Hong-Mei's mastery of the instrument is evident. She sets different moods in her pieces. It is amazing the wide variety of music she can create with only 2 strings. The 2-string instrument "Erhu" is a classical Chinese music instrument and the sound it produces is similar to that of a violin but with a very distinctive tone.

Pandit Jasraj - ChandraGhanta

Born in 1930 in Hissar (Haryana), Pandit Jasraj is one of the best-known classical vocalists. He belongs to the Mewati gharana, as did his father, Pandit Motiram. One of the joys of Jasraj's music is his depiction of the unusual. He has recorded extensively, especially since the late '80s, for a number of the leading companies specializing in Indian classical music including Chhanda Dhara, EMI India, Magnasound/OMI, Moment and Navras.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Night Song

Canadian experimental guitarist Brook and the late, "shining star of Qawwal" come together for a second time to bring the music of Pakistan into a creative new realm. If you are a traditionalist who wants nothing but Pakistani music, stay away. This album is soaked in ambient electronic guitar noises and some of Khan's most out-of-the-tradition singing. These experiments are not to be confused with lots of the electro-noodling, however. Both artists were devoted to their gods and their music, and it shows in the potency of these tracks. Brook seems to have been a natural match for Nusrat and has drawn out an unusual performance that probably fulfills the ideas that were only hinted at in their first collaboration, Musst Musst.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is best known for Qawwali music, the devotional music of the Sufis, taking it to incredible heights, but here we see perhaps his most successful cross-over album, with an excellent supporting cast, including Michael Brook on infinite guitar, keyboards and percussion, that gives Nusrat's music a broader feel. It was really a shame to lose Nusrat at the peak of his career. He had become involved in so many fascinating projects, including singing with Eddie Vedder on "The Face of Love," from the soundtrack to "Dead Man Walking." His soaring harmonics were a badly needed infusion into the world music scene, when it was beginning to grow stale.

Richard Galliano - Tango Forever Live

Richard Galliano (born December 12, 1950) is a French accordionist.
He was drawn to music at an early age, starting with the accordion at 4, influenced by his father Lucien, an accordionist originally from Italy, living in Nice.

After a long and intense period of study (he took up lessons on the trombone, harmony, and counterpoint at the Academy of Music in Nice), at 14, in a search to expand his ideas on the accordion, he began listening to jazz and heard on records the great trumpet player Clifford Brown. "I copied all the choruses of Clifford Brown, impressed by his tone and his drive, his way of phrasing over the thunderous playing of Max Roach." Fascinated by this new world, Richard was amazed that the accordion had never been part of this musical adventure.

Some later collaborations include George Mraz, Al Foster, Juliette Greco, Charles Aznavour, Ron Carter, Chet Baker, Enrico Rava, Martial Solal, Miroslav Vitouš, Trilok Gurtu, Jan Garbarek, Michel Petrucciani, Michel Portal, Eddy Louiss, Wynton Marsalis, and Toots Thielemans. He was a key member of Claude Nougaro's band for several years as a pianist and accordionist.

Faryaad Hussain Khan Tabla Tornado.

Born in 1948 in a village called Mand near the industrial city of Sialkot, the late Ustad Faryaad Hussain Khan was the foremost disciple of Ustad Ghulam Hussain Khan. Having followed an arduous period of practice, Faryaad Hussain Khan, popularly known as Bhulli Khan was regarded amongst the dexterous tabla players of the world, particularly for his mastery over difficult tabla strokes such as 'Dhire Dhire'. Bhulli Khan had provided accompaniment to the leading classical musicians of Pakistan and performed at various venues internationally. The maestro sadly passed away on 3rd January 2004. In his only tabla solo release, Ustad Bhulli Khan has paid tribute to his mentor, the great Ustad Ghulam Hussain Khan.

Omar Faruk Tekbilek - Whirling

Whirling celebrates the melodies and rhythms of the Middle East. Famed instrumentalist Omar Faruk Tekbilek plays an impressive array of instruments, including the two he is most famous for: the ney flute and the lute-like baglama. He is joined by Brian Keane, who contributes splendid background on guitar and synthesizer, and Ara Dinkjian and Arto Tuncboyaciyan on a variety of Middle Eastern instruments. Hassan Isikkut provides vocals. Faruk, a well-known musician and composer in Turkey, is also an accomplished jazz musician, and this aspect of his musical abilities adds a subtle flavor to the pieces.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Shahbaaz

Named for 13th-century Sufi master Qalandar Shahbaaz, Shahbaaz is Nusrat at his most intense--just look at the CD's cover photo: facial grimace, closed eyes, sweat on the forehead, raised hand, and the open mouth from which the greatest qawwali singing of the 20th century sprang forth for some 25 years before his death in 1997. From the first seconds of tabla drumming and clapping on "Beh Haadh Ramza Dhasdha," Nusrat and party lose themselves in the divine Islamic chant whose lyrics recall ancient Sufi poetry and stories. The weave of harmonium, drums, and Nusrat's improvised vocals suck listeners into a repetitive, ecstatic vacuum of music while the steady throbbing drums and handclapping ground the divine mania. Some of the most amazing vocal work shines on this CD, both by Nusrat and his brother Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, whose higher-pitched, metallic throat wailing forms a wild counterpart to Nusrat's fuller, lower register. The gem of this CD is the final song, "Jewleh Lal," a 20-minute melodic number that swings with especially powerful call-and-response praise for Qalandar Shahbaaz. Though Shahbaaz doesn't offer the full spectrum of Sufi traditional songs, this may well be the best taste of the passion and vocal artistry that this innovator gave to both the Eastern and Western worlds. --Karen Karleski

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is today acknowledged as the greatest modern master of Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis. Having popularised this beautiful and inspirational music beyond Muslim peoples to a worldwide audience, with this album he explored for the first time a whole new musical territory.

In the making of 'Mustt Mustt', Nusrat embarked upon an exploration of various Western styles and rhythms, to which he brought his own Asian approach. The Pakistani musicians from Nusrat's Party are accompanied by guitarist Robert Ahwai (West Indies), bassist Darryl Johnson (USA) and percussionist James Pinker (New Zealand). Produced by Michael Brook, who also plays guitar, the album is a unique meeting of international talent.

The late, great Pakistani Qawwali singer's first collaboration with producer/guitarist Michael Brook took the passionate, gymnastic tenor out of tradition and into trip-hop nation. Recorded at Peter Gabriel's expansive Real World Studios, the album combines ethnic percussion, programmed beats (some by Gabriel himself), Brook's atmospheric and infinite guitar swells, and loop-based motifs with Khan's complex, ornamented vocal delivery and devotional lyrics. On the later Night Song, Brook and Khan perfected their cross-cultural dialogue, though Mustt, with its fiery vocal runs and funky, ethereal production, has become an important touchstone in the ethno-techno movement that includes Transglobal Underground and Loop Guru. --James Rotondi

The Meditative Music of Pandit Jasraj

An exponent of the Mewati tradition which originated with the court musicians of the former princely states of Jodhpur and Bhopal, Pandit Jasraj has enriched his inheritance with a sweet and mellifluous voice, which is his natural endowment, and a prodigious and rigorous discipline, which is his act of will.

It was his eldest brother, Pandit Motiram, who was Pandit Jasrajs Guru, in the true sense of that word, and who imparted to the young aspirant the distinctive " Kan Gyaki" style oaf the Mewati tradition. To these assiduous schools, Pandit Jasraj adds a native imagination, sensitivity and spontaneity.

The unhurried unfolding of his alap, the tapestry of his bol-taan, his playful sargam, and the architecture of his taan patterns, make of Pandit Jasraj one of the most felicitous performers of recent times. Kodo - Heartbeat Drummers Of Japan

Kodo is a Japanese group that has become an international phenomenon, based on the island of Sado, that has taken the world by storm with their new stylings on semi-traditional taiko drumming. Founded in 1981, the group's name has dual meaning; according to the group, it translates both to "heartbeat -- the primal source of all rhythm," and "children of the drum, a reflection of Kodo's desire to play their drums simply, with the heart of a child." The group spends one-third of an average year touring in Japan, one-third touring the rest of the world, and one-third in rigorous workouts in their village on Sado. They have toured in all continents except Antarctica in their attempts to spread world peace via the messenger of music. Among their projects, aside from straightforward taiko performances, are a collaboration with new age synthesizer genius Isao Tomita for Nasca Fantasy, instructing the über-eclectic Cirque du Soleil in taiko for their own performances, the soundtrack for The Hunted, and a yearly "Earth Celebration" festival on Sado for percussionists from around the world to attend. They are ambassadors of peace through music and the current top bearers of the living art form of taiko drumming. ”

This authentic Japanese Taiko-drum ensemble sometimes adds modern and/or Western touches to their thunderous drumming repertoire.

Bidur Mallik & Sons

The musicians of the Mallik family have for many generations been masters of the dhrupad style, the oldest form of North Indian art song. In India they are famous for their own rhythmically accentuated singing style and the rich repertoire of compositions, some using ragas that are sung only by their family. Because of the demands that the dhrupad places on the voice, it is usually sung by several singers at once. In India they say that the strength of four elephants is required to develop it fully. Bidur Mallik and his sons, Ramkumar and Premkumar, were fortunate enough for a time to be the ensemble that came closest to this standard.

Call of the Valley (Santoor; Shivkumar Sharma)

Shivkumar Sharma, the guitarist Brijbhushan Kabra, and flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia were all aged about 30 when they made Call of the Valley. Shivkumar Sharma, who had made his first solo album in 1960, was responsible for establishing and popularizing the instrument in Hindustani classical circles. Kabra was also having to prove himself because of the guitar's Western and Indian popular music associations Chaurasia's problem was the wide popularity of the bansuri -- a bamboo transverse flute -- and his need to establish himself with the instrument. In 1967, the concept behind this album was as revolutionary as it was traditional. Deuter - Cicada

Deuter, one of the first artists on the Kuckuck Schallplatten label, has thirteen titles on Kuckuck Schallplatten, as well as the musical score of a picture poem released on the MonteVideo label entitled The Petrified Forest. They offer his unique uplifting melodies played on flute, guitar and synthesizer, blended with the sounds of nature. His creations incorporate a lightness of spirit, depth of vision, and a musical medley of East and West. Deuter himself is a product of both East and West. He was born in 1945, in a small village of post-war Germany. As a child, he learned flute and taught himself guitar and harmonica. As a young adult, he worked as a graphic designer and newspaper columnist in Munich, but the musical drive within him persisted. Eckart Rahn, a young record producer at that time, recognized Deuter's talents, and in 1971 released his first recording, D, on the then fledgling Kuckuck label. Deuter began to go into the mountains to record birds, water and wind to accompany his music. He was one of the first artists to do so and his deep relationship with nature persists to this day. He also began his spiritual search, spending much of his time at an ashram in Poona, India. Deuter was also one of the first artists to blend that Eastern influence into his music. He did that blending in such a gentle fashion that it never jarred Western ears, unaccustomed to Eastern rhythms and tonalities.

Deuter - Koyasan: Reiki Sound Healing

Deuter, whom I consider the prototypical new age music artist, puts his entire palette of musical abilities on display on Koyasan, Reiki Sound Healing, his latest release on New Earth Records. Incorporating a global mixture of instruments, including the Chinese erhu (here played by Yi Xie, all other instruments played by the artist himself), Japanese shakuhachi flute, East Indian tamboura, Tibetan bowls, as well some of his trademarks (recorder, piano, silver and bamboo flute, bells, and his always gorgeous shimmering synthesizer shadings and lush textures), Deuter takes the listener on a serene, mystical voyage through a variety of peaceful soundscapes. Regardless of the instruments used, the pace is relaxed, soothing, frequently contemplative and highly evocative.

The Ventures - Play The Greatest Instrumental Hits Of All Time (2002)

Recorded between 1996 and 2000 (although the liner notes refer to the version of "Hawaii Five-O" having been started in the mid-'80s), this set is largely devoted to covers of instrumental hits of the late '50s and early '60s, although remakes of the Ventures' own two biggest hits ("Walk, Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O") are present. Otherwise, the track list looks a little like a mix tape of some of the biggest instrumental songs from the time when the Ventures were at their peak: "Rebel Rouser," "Apache," "Peter Gunn," "Bongo Rock," "Honky Tonk," "Sleep Walk," "Tequila," "Green Onions," "James Bond Theme," "Secret Agent Man." Original members Bob Bogle and Don Wilson are still on hand, though original guitarist Nokie Edwards is only credited as a "guest" artist, and the late Mel Taylor is replaced by his son Leon Taylor on some tracks (the precise ones aren't specified). This has all the hallmarks of being an uninspired rehash of a band's glory days, but it actually sounds surprisingly good, though certainly no significant ground is broken and you'd be better off with collections of the original recordings (whether by the Ventures or others). There's no concession to inappropriate modernized production -- it sounds like the Ventures, the lean, hungry, reverbed guitar sound to the forefront. These are pretty energetic and capable renditions, though perhaps the only mild surprise in the track selection is "Tall Cool One" by the Wailers (which only just made the Top Forty in 1959), the Northwest group that helped inspire the Ventures when they began.
