Shankar - Pancha Nadai Pallavi (1989)

As if playing one violin within the Western art music tradition wasn't difficult enough, the virtuoso L. Shankar has made it his trade to both sing and play a customized double violin within the contexts of Hindustani, Carnatic, Western, and experimental musical sensibilities. On this 1990 ECM release, Pancha Nadai Pallavi, he lays down two tracks, the first without percussion and the second in collaboration with Zakir Hussain on tabla and Vikku Vinayakram on ghatam. Caroline also accompanies the L. Shankar with the drone setting sruthi (a small one-note hand-pumped reed organ) and talam (a pair of small hand cymbals). With the first track L. Shankar performs the ragam "Sankarabharanam" (a ragam is the Carnatic equivalent to the Hindustani raga). For nearly 30 minutes he elegantly articulates an innumerable series of variations on traditional forms, melodies, and rhythms. The double violin allows him to imitate the sounds of a multi-octave string ensemble. On the CD's second cut a serpentine nine and one-half beat rhythmic cycle, the Mahalakshmi Tala, provides the temporal framework for the performance. An original creation by L. Shankar himself, this tala is realized by tabla superstar Zakir Hussain and the celebrated ghatam (clay water pot) player Vikku Vinayakram. Both of these percussive masters draw a myriad of tones and conjure up a fortified stew of rhythmic cadences from their respective instruments. In sum, Shankar's Pancha Nadai Pallavi is a smashing CD that represents virtuosic creativity and experimentation at work in both solo and collaborative contexts.

Shankar - Soul Searcher (1990)

Shankar's breathtaking violin melodies

The Enchanting Violin Of Dr. N. Rajam (2003)

Violin was the first Western instrument to be adopted for playing Carnatic Music. Around 1800 AD., Balaswami Dikshitar, the younger brother of Muthuswami Dikshitar learnt the playing of violin from a band master aat Fort St Georgein Chennai (Madras), India. He first learnt western music and later adopted the instrument to play Carnatic music. The technique of playing the violin was perfected to such an extent that it became an indispensable accompaniment to Carnatic Vocal and instrumental music.

Dr. N. Rajam takes credit for introducing the violin not only as a solo instrument but also as an accompanying instrument for vocal and instrumental music in the Hindustani tradition. Oriental Records Inc. is privileged to present the first solo recording of Dr. N. Rajam accompanied by her daughter and the world renowned tabla maestro, Zakir Hussain.

Lalgudi G. Jayaraman - Violin - In Concert (1995)

One of the most remarkable of the Southern Indian violin players. Born in 1930, he studied initially with his father, V.R. Gopala Iyer. By the age of 12, he had advanced to accompanying other musicians. In 1965 at the Edinburgh Festival he so impressed Yehudi Menuhin that the maestro presented him with his own violin. Jayaraman is a soloist, accompanist -- for example, for the classical vocalist Maharajapuram Santhanam -- and composer. He recorded a very interesting jugalbandi album with the Hindustani sarod player Amjad Ali Khan called South Meets North (G/ECSD 2932) in 1983 which deserves a CD reissue. On it they perform "Bhapali" ("Mohanam") and "Malkauns" ("Hindolam"). Other releases by him are to be found on AVM, Kaveri and Oriental. ~ Ken Hunt, Rovi

Julia Fischer - Russian Violin Concertos: Khachaturian, Prokofiev, Glazunov (2004)

Julia Fischer, born in Munich, Germany, is of German-Slovakian parentage. Among the most prestigious competitions that Fischer has won are the International Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition under Lord Yehudi Menuhin's supervision, where she won both the first prize and the special prize for best Bach solo work performance in 1995 and the Eighth Eurovision Competition for Young Instrumentalists in 1996, which was broadcast in 22 countries from Lisbon. In 1997, Fischer was awarded the “Prix d'Espoir” by the Foundation of European Industry.In fall 2004 the label PentaTone released Julia Fischer's first CD: Russian violin concertos with Yakov Kreizberg and the Russian National Orchestra. Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan

Born in Kunnakudi in the year 1935, Vaidyanathan is a multi-faceted musician. He had his early training under his father Ramaswamy sastrigal. He dwells with ease and competence at the highest and the lowest octave.

He made his debut at the age of 12. He joined film orchestra with Modern Theatres, Salem. Before switching over to Solos in 1960, he accompanied many senior artistes of his time. Since 19680, he is secretary, Sri Tyagabramha Mahotsava Sabha, Thiruvaiyaru. He was appointed State Artiste by the Government of Tamilnadu in 1984 and Asthana Vidwan of Kanchi Mutt in 1987.

He was awarded many times by various Sabhas and institutions, Akashwani Awards - 1981, 1987, "Violin Chakravarthy ", "Kalaimamani", "ISai Perarignar", Violin Award of Singapore. He gave concerts all over the world.

A.R. Subramaniam

Born in 1940, A.R. Subramaniam started his early training under his father Arumugam Pillai in Nagaswaram and then switched over to Thavil under his brother Palanivel.

He has had 3442 Concerts upto 19990 - which is by any standard a colossal figure. Laya Maestro among the Thavil Vidwans, Subramaniam's forte is pleasing sound. He gave concerts in Europe, USA in 1985 and received many awards e.g. "Kalaimamani" - State Artiste - Tamilnadu Government, Sangita Natak Akademy - "ISai Perarignar" from the Tamilnadu Sangam, Chennai (being the first Thavildar to receive the honour)

Sivamani is the son of S. M. Anandan, a Chennai-based percussionist. He began drumming at the age of seven. Sivamani started his music career at the age of 11, and later shifted to Mumbai. He was inspired by Noel Grant and Billy Cobham. In 1990, he actually shared the stage with Billy Cobham at Mumbai's Rang Bhavan. He touts S. P. Balasubrahmanyam as his Godfather

Sivamani's earliest experiments with music were with Carnatic maestros including Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, T. V. Gopalakrishnan, Valliyapatti Subramaniam and Pazhanivel, and L. Shankar. The tabla player Zakir Hussain invited him to share the stage with himself and Trilok Gurtu at a fusion concert in Mumbai. Sivamani has since collaborated with several musicians including Louis Banks. He has done world tours with A. R. Rahman and collaborated with him for Bombay Dreams. He has also been a part of a musical group called Shraddha which comprises Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, U. Srinivas and Loy Mendonsa

Shivamani has a music band named "Asia Electrik" with Nilathri Kumar, Louiz Banks and Ravi Chari. He also plays at another world music band named "Silk & Shrada." Sivamani has played drums for many notable film score composers hailing from Tamil Nadu. He has played drums for many Indian films including Roja, Rang De Basanti, Taal, Lagaan, Dil Se, Guru, and Kabul Express. Some of the notable songs that he has contributed to include "Kadhal Rojave," "Pudhu Vellai Malai" and Chaiya Chaiya.  Sivamani has performed in Dubai, Moscow, New York, Doha and Toronto. During the Mumbai Festival 2005, Coca-Cola India invited him to perform at the Limca Fresh Face 2005 event, where he created melody from Limca bottles. He has also worked on Galli Galli Sim Sim, an educational series on Pogo and Cartoon Network.
Sivamani has also acted in movies. He co-starred with Thomas Jane in the Telugu movie Padamati Sandhya Ragam in 1986. Sivamani is also playing drums for Chennai Super Kings, one of the cricket teams of Indian Premier League.
