Yu Hong Mei - Erhu Chant (2006)

On this CD, Yu Hong-Mei's mastery of the instrument is evident. She sets different moods in her pieces. It is amazing the wide variety of music she can create with only 2 strings. The 2-string instrument "Erhu" is a classical Chinese music instrument and the sound it produces is similar to that of a violin but with a very distinctive tone.

The Chieftains - Fire in the Kitchen (1998)

The second album to appear on Paddy's 'Wicklow' label. This album was recorded by Paddy and the Chieftains over a month (October 1997) spent in Halifax and Cape Breton Island, Canada, and features the unique vocal and instrumental styles of some of Canada's finest musicians, such as The Rankin Family, Laura Smith, Ashley Mac Isaac, Natalie MacMaster, to name but a few.

String Tradition (Mamadou Diabate, Ustad Shujaat Husain Khan, Vidwan Lalgudi Gjr Khrishnan)

Strings Tradition is an original production, different from the countless recordings which try to mix and mingle musical cultures of various origins. It deals with the union of classical traditions (West Africa, North Indian and South India) which have little in common with the vague idea of popular music that we usually associate with the music of the Indian sitar and violin and the Malian kora. These three musicians are all important artists in their own countries and each one offers inspiration and guidance to the others' musical traditions. They are accompanied by Gourishankar on tabla and Muraly Trichy on ghatam.

From the first track, "Nyanafi," written by Diabate, the trio shows to feel at its ease, with a theme full of pathos and soulfulness. In "Birds first flight," by Lalgudi, on the contrary, it is all about the accelerated and repeated cadenzas, which make the track an enthusing crescendo, with some brilliant improvisations. "Himalayan Rain" (by Shujaat) depicts an introspective, meditative mood, while the final "Sigui Dyarra" is a perfect example of interaction between the three.

MAMADOU DIABATE was born in Kita, Mali, one of the major centres of the Mande culture and comes from a family of griots (or jeli) the singers who trasmitted and kept alive the oral patrimony of wisdom and knowledge of the community. Still a teenager, Mamadou performed at regional ceremonies, becoming quickly a celebrity. His kinship with the great kora player Toumani Diabate allowed him to become involved in the international music business, where he is now building an already significant career.

SHUJAAT KHAN, son and pupil of the famous Ustad Vilayat Khan, deceased in 2004, revealed his special qualities when still a child (his first public performances were when he was six). From that moment his name has appeared on the programmes of every major festival of his country and after that his art began to be appreciated all around the world, and in particular in the United States.

LALGUDI GJR KRISHNAN as well belongs to a family with an ancient musical tradition (his father is the famous violinist Lalgudi G Jayaraman) and he has already proved, in the previous recordings for our label, what an inventive player he is.

The Strings Traditions are accompanied by Gourishankar on tabla and Muraly Trichy on ghatam.

Zanzibar - Music of Celebration (2001)

Long before world fusion was a marketing category for the music industry, African, South Indian, and the Middle Eastern musical cultures commingled on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. Situated at a confluence of intercontinental trading routes in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar provided -- and continues to provide -- a natural meeting place for polyglot sounds from around the globe. Zanzibar: Music of Celebration presents a sampling of live field recordings made on this island crossroads between 1989 and 1990. A Topic Records and British Library National Sound Archive release, it gives us a glimpse of Zanzibar's vibrant music scene by way of its two main styles: Taarab and Maulidi. The CD's first five cuts introduce Taarab, which is often played at weddings and other large festivals around the Swahili coast. From the lush, Egyptian-influenced sound of Culture Music Club's exotically orchestrated "Dhikrayat" to the Indian imbued sounds of Changanlal Keshavij Pithadia's "Prayer," Taarab underscores the diversity of Zanzibar's cultural makeup. Alternatively, Maulidi is customarily reserved for sacred occasions, such as celebrating the birth of Mohammed, though it too is making rounds into more secular settings. The two examples of Maulidi heard here -- Sheikh Othuma Rahman's staid "Recitation From the Koran" and Rashid Makame's strident "Kidumbak" -- reflect both the traditional and more contemporary versions. Whatever it is, Maulidi or Taarab, all the cuts on Zanzibar: Music of Celebration beam with an aura of revelry. Janet Topp Fargion's liner notes and photographs complement her unique field recordings and give use a first-rate introduction to the multifarious cultures and musics from this unique Indian Ocean outpost.

Recordings, text and photographs by Janet Topp Fargion Taarab is the most common style of music performed at weddings on the island of Zanzibar - a unique blend of musical elements from the Middle East, India and the West, combined with, to varying degrees, local African musical practices. It is an essential ingredient of most celebrations. And when Zanzibaris are not playing taarab, they are playing maulidi. Although this is primarily a sober religious performance style (celebrating the birth of the Prophet Mohammed) it is also becoming common at wedding celebrations, albeit in a more extrovert guise. Here, recited chapters of the Koran are interspersed with kasida (hymns) accompanied on several tuned frame drums. These recordings, made at actual celebrations and in rehearsal for big events, give us a glimpse of the ethnic, religious, and gender composition of this Indian Ocean island culture.

The Ventures' 2002 release Play the Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time was a competent effort, and the same could be said of its sequel, Play the Greatest Instrumental Hits of All Time, Vol. 2. Once again all tracks were cut between 1996-2000 by a lineup featuring original members Bob Bogle and Don Wilson, as well as Nokie Edwards on some lead guitar (though evidently not as a full member, since he's credited as one of the "guest artists"). And again the song list leans on well-known instrumental rock hits of the late '50s and early '60s by Duane Eddy, Sandy Nelson, Johnny & the Hurricanes, the Fireballs, the Tornados, and the like. A few surprises, if mild ones, are on hand in covers of the obscure "Percolator" (originally an LP track by Earl Palmer) and, more particularly, "Cry for a Shadow," the George Harrison-John Lennon instrumental recorded by the Beatles back in 1961. Usually the arrangements stick to the straight-ahead guitar sound for which the Ventures are known.

Concrete Blonde - Mexican Moon (1993)

After the demise of their original label, I.R.S., Concrete Blonde released Mexican Moon on Capitol in the fall of 1993. The band, once again, produced themselves with Sean Freehill, and Paul Thompson returned to the fold on drums after sitting out Walking in London due to immigration problems.

The album is a striking marriage of Johnette Napolitano's dark, lyrical imagery and the band's alternative-tinged pop sensibilities making it, perhaps, their most fully realized effort. "Jenny I Read" kicks things off with the tale of a chance encounter of a fallen, reclusive starlet. Guitarist James Mankey shows versatility playing acoustic and Spanish guitar on the dreamy title track and the wah-wah effects of the brooding "Jesus Forgive Me (For the Things I'm About to Say)." "Heal It Up" was the unsuccessful single but is a bracing number with a ferocious vocal performance by Napolitano. Despite the inspired playing, intelligent and insightful lyrics, and the crisp production, Mexican Moon failed to expand the group's audience and would prove to be their last release before breaking up.

Rivers Edge - The Sweet Life (2010)

How Smooth is too Smooth? That is the question. And what does it mean to be smooth? All Jazz by its very nature is smooth in one way or another. So when Tommy Lathan and Paul Gadbois began to compose for their debut CD, they had several philosophical discussions about what musical style they should create. More than half way through the writing and recording of their first CD, their philosophical contemplation finally lead them to conclude that their sound was not going to be created by philosophy, but rather by pure creativity. They both felt that eventually, popular opinion and the passing of time would somehow create a label that defines the sound of Rivers Edge. Interestingly enough, some people are already referring to their sound as “Groove Jazz with an Edge”.
“The Sweet Life” is made up of ten jazz tunes that range from “totally laid back” (Midnight Inspiration) to “in your face” (Steppin UP). Many of the songs on this CD are mid-tempo compositions that are layered with soothing melodies and funky grooves.

Various - Sounds of Sudan

A collection of songs culled from recordings made during a stop in a European tour by three of Sudan's more popular artists in 1986; Abdel Gadir Salim, Abdel Aziz El Mubarak, and Mohamed Gubara recorded a number of tracks while touring together. Abdel Gadir Salim, accompanying himself on the oud, provides a look at the more rural sounds from the Kordofan area of Sudan. El Mubarak gives a much more urban sound, complete with influences from the greater world. Mohamed Gubara provides a contemporary palette lyrically, but accompanies himself on the ancient tambour lyre. The sound is an interesting one throughout the album, with careful picking on the ouds mixed with the basic bouncing accompaniment strokes. Accordion work from Azhari Abdel Gadir helps push the music of the two oud players considerably as well. Vocally, the first two are mildly similar, holding a good deal of the same vocal aesthetics. Gubara, on the other hand, sings in an abnormally high range, not quite at falsetto level, but getting there. Without delving into full-fledged modern Sudanese pop, there aren't a terribly large number of artists or albums of Sudanese semi-traditional music on the market. This album is one of a few in a relatively narrow field, and does well as such. Give it a listen as an introduction to the music of a rather large region of influence that doesn't quite conform to the sounds of the rest of North Africa.

Japanese Traditional Music - GAGAKU

This is an album of traditional Japanese gagaku music, with the full traditional ensemble. The album contains works of all of the major categories of gagaku, kangen (solely instrumental), bugaku samai (dances of the Left-Chinese origin), and bugaku umai (dances of the Right-Korean origin). Also included is "Azuma Asobi," a song of native Japanese origin. The music is performed by Kunaicho Gakubu, which is the Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency, the Imperial court musicians, who all have a relatively large amount of experience under their belts. The music is representative of all gagaku music, with the sho's (mouth organs) placing a quasi-melody under the music, and the hichiriki (oboes) providing a somber melody. The music of gagaku is nearly always given in an almost otherworldly way, and this is no exception. There are other recordings of gagaku out there, but this one is relatively similar to all of them. Lyrichord's album of the Kyoto Imperial Court Orchestra may be the best recording for those new to the sound, as it reprises both the ritualistic side of the music as well as the artistic side, but this one isn't bad either.
