Waterlily Acoustic's custom recording gear (made by Esoteric Audio Research) shines on this elegant, rich recording of Fleck and his fellow musicians made in an old Santa Barbara church. The in-depth liner notes are a comprehensive companion to the music and the history surrounding it. They stuck to the basics for this one - single stereo pair of mics, pure 2-track analog w/no adulteration. It sparkles! The music is a joy to listen to, the various flavours of each musician's style mixed together to make for a colourful, melodic album. Definately a rare colaboration that shouldn't be missed!!

Wolfgang Puschnig, Jatinder Thakur, Dhafer Youssef - Odem

Austrian reed man Wolfgang Puschnig, Tunisian oud player and vocalist Dhafer Youssef, and Indian tabla master Jatinder Thakur met in Puschnig's home base of Vienna at the beginning of the '90s, but they did not record as a trio until last year. These three tracks with special guests were recorded in 1997 and have just been released. Odem, their debut, is an intimate and relaxed meeting of three distinct musical languages that find a convincing common ground.

Prem Joshua - Desert Visions (1994)

The album is a wonderful blend of East Indian, Arabic, African and Western music. The instruments and rhythms weave back and forth between the various influences in a spirited and lively manner. One track may have a hint of New Orleans Jazz balanced against the romantic and haunting sounds of the desert. Another track features East Indian vocals and tabla in a spirited dance with saxophone and flute. Overall easy to listen to ranging from sprightly to ambient in texture during the course of the album.

Ravi Shankar - West Meets East - The Historic Shankar - Menuhin Sessions (1999)

That a Western violinist should choose to pair with the illustrious Ravi Shankar is not in itself surprising. The violin was fully absorbed (and tuned much lower) by the Indian classical music establishment by the 19th century, and more recently has produced performers such as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and the highly experimental L. Shankar. However, aside from being a highly accomplished set of recordings, the WEST MEETS EAST series--three Menuhin-Shankar collaborations that were later distilled into this one--elevated world music to new heights.

Menuhin had championed Indian music in the West for years before learning how to play it. His sensitivity to the material is demonstrated on "Swara Kakali," particularly during the tremendous duet that closes the track. On the evening raga, "Raga Piloo," Menuhin and Shankar glide in and out of each other's styles in a performance that is alternately Indian and Russian/Jewish, bound by their obvious empathy.

Recorded in England, The United States and France in 1966, 1967 and 1976. Includes liner notes by Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menhuin.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Re-Orient - Baluji Shrivastav

Like an extended jam session post-Coltrane, this album fuses Indian sounds primarily with a saxophone in a relatively free manner. Baluji Shrivastav has been around the fusion scenes of London for some time, and with Re-Orient, aka Jazz Orient, ... Full Descriptionhe's been one of the go-to performers for ARC Records when some contemporary Indian is called for. Here, they fuse jazz and Indian music, along with elements from Middle Eastern music (Hossam Ramzy provides some Egyptian percussion throughout that often mirrors the Indian percussion). Guy Barker and Andy Shappard provide the brass for the fusion, always capably adding in the accentuation needed for the piece at hand. With the palette of sound roving from genre to genre rather often throughout the album, the overall effect is a piece of nice ambient music. It never gets too terribly daring, but it never quite falls flat either (even the elevator music of "The Seven Wonders" comes off as nostalgic exotica more than kitsch). Worth a listen for fans of jazz fusion in a less serious tone than the old John McLaughlin recordings.
