Vishwa Mohan Bhatt - Mohan's Veena

The Indian classical tradition of Jugalbandi, or duet playing, where two musicians perform one raga together, is a challenge demanding a high level of mutual respect and understanding. At its height it demonstrates two musical souls united, perfectly tuned into each others aesthetic vision. Father and son, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Salil Bhatt epitomise the true spirit of Jugalbandi in this live performance recorded at the 2002 Saptak Music Festival. Historically, the relationship between father and son has played a key role in the development of Indian music. Over hundreds of years, several family dynasties have built up vast volumes of musical knowledge which has been carefully nurtured and orally passed onto the next generation. It has always been generally accepted that the most in-depth teaching is passed on to the son, who then bears the responsibility to carve out new musical paths, ensuring a healthy future for a music culture which has so far survived and flourished over centuries. The young Salil Bhatt represents the eighth generation in a family of musicians which hails from Jaipur in Rajasthan. In this vibrant centre of traditional music, his father and mentor, Viswa Mohan Bhatt started his musical training with his eldest brother Pandit Shashi Mohan Bhatt, a renowned vocalist, before taking musical guidance from the legendary Sitarist, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Not only has Viswa Mohan Bhatt successfully imbibed a rich musical legacy, he has made one of the most significant contributions to Indian music in modern times. His creation, the 'Mohan Veena' is a radical transformation of the western Hawaiian guitar, adapted to express the subtlest nuances required in Indian classical music. The Mohan Veena consists of 3 melodic strings, 5 drone strings and a further 12 sympathetic strings and has been designed to ingeniously assimilate the sounds of the ancient Veena, Sitar and Sarod. The tuning of the instrument varies according to the particular raga being played. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is universally acknowledged as one of the most innovative Indian musicians today. He has successfully managed to incorporate both vocal and instrumental styles of playing into his music, and his versatility as an artist is reflected in scores of successful musical collaborations with top musicians from over the world. His capacity for invention and assimilation was globally recognised by the award of the coveted Grammy in 1994, for his recording with American slide guitarist Ry Cooder. This performance captures father and son playing a musical set which reflects the variety of musical styles found in the Indian sub-continent. Raga Bageshri is one of the most popular ragas performed in Indian classical music. It is romantic in character, and its structure makes it suitable for extended improvisations. The performance begins with the traditional alap (track 1), a slow, improvised elaboration of the main notes and melodic phrases of the raga, reflective and meditative in character. A gentle lilting tempo is introduced for the 'jod' section (track 2), which gradually gains pace as the phrases become more intense and exciting. The first composition (track 3) is set to a slow rhythmic cycle of sixteen beats called 'teental'. Here, the tabla accompanist, Sandeep Das, is given the opportunity to demonstrate his virtuosity in a short solo which explores the colourful range of tonal qualities of his instrument. Sandeep Das is one the most exciting young percussionists in India, a disciple of Pandit Kishan Maharaj, and represents the Benares school of tabla playing. The second composition (track 4) uses the same sixteen beat rhythmic framework in a much faster tempo. As the recital gathers pace, the three musicians skilfully echo the other's improvised phrases in expressions of spontaneity that can only be captured in live performance. Indian classical musicians have always been able to draw on a vast, rich stock of regional folk music, and the second disc features three compositions drawing on this repertoire, performed in the light semi-classical vein. Based on the classical Raga Tilak Kamod, 'Lori' (track 1) is a lullaby traditionally sung by a mother to cradle her young child to sleep. Track 2 is based on a popular Rajasthani folk song 'Padharo Hamare Des', based on the Raga 'Mand'. Finally, the performance concludes with Raga Bhairavi, an auspicious raga which is customarily played to conclude an evening concert. Notes: John Ball

Johann Friedrich Fasch - Orchestral Music

These are all premiere recordings. This disc celebrates Fasch’s 250th anniversary. In January 2007 Tempesta di Mare premiered in modern times four large-scale orchestral works by Johann Friedrich Fasch, a contemporary of Bach and Telemann. Richard Stone of Tempesta di Mare describes the pieces as ‘fantastic, true discoveries… they have the breadth and complexity of J.S. Bach without the austerity, and have a much more evolved sense of orchestral colour that’s truly extraordinary’. The Philadelphia based period instrument band Tempesta di Mare eschews the driven, highly rhetorical style of some European ensembles, and instead prefers a more relaxed and elegant approach. It sustains Fasch’s longer movements well by listening to what the composer has to say rather than overlaying a strong interpretative varnish of its own.

Paul Horn - Inside the Taj Mahal - Inside II (1968, 1972)

Inside the Taj Mahal is -- to use a much overused term -- a classic in the new age community. Indeed, in 2002, New Age Voice solicited input and compiled a list of the most influential 25 new age albums of all time. This masterpiece is right there at number 11. The perfect acoustics of the great hall (a 28-second echo with no breakup) intrigued Paul Horn and he received permission to perform and record there. This glorious album is a processing marvel and the harbinger of many great performances to come. The marvel is that the echo is the only process. It gives Horn's flute a layered texture, almost a reverb feel. The sentry on duty adds some strange Hindi chanting. Horn's wonderful flute is the focal point, however, and, as always, he is up to the task. The marvelous melodies and deep improvs are matchless, seamless, and timeless. This is one of the Top Ten acoustic ambient albums ever. Its place on the list of the 25 most influential is well-deserved

Guitar Fingerstyle 1 (1996)

This is one of my favorite albums. The music is, in my opinion, excellently chosen. Some compilation CDs have awkward transitions between artists. On this album, the songs are arranged in a very pleasing order. You can listen and appreciate the different styles of the artists without feeling like you are getting pulled in different directions. The best way I can describe it is to write that it is like reading an excellently chosen book of short stories.
This album is fabulous for artistic inspiration. It is beautiful without being imposing. As a teacher of English, I often look for music that will inspire my students to write without distracting them. For the past four years, this CD has been one that my students have enjoyed listening to while they work.

Shivkumar Sharma & Zakir Hussain - The Flow of Time

Scintillating santoor mastery from Shivkumar Sharma and assured reliable rhythm accompaniment from tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. The SANTOOR is essentially a folk instrument widely used as an accompaniment to singing in the Kashmir valley. Originally this was known as Shata Tantri Veena (100 stringed Lute). The Persians named it Santoor and the name became popular and has endured. Instruments of this family are known as Yang Chin in China, Zymbalon in Hungary and Rumania and Santoori in Greece. Despite its one hundred strings mounted on 25 frets, the Santoor inherently has only a limited range for the articulation of classical melodies. But Shivkumar Sharma after relentless experimentation, has modified the instrument by adding four more frets and 16 more strings to make minor adjustments in the arrangement of the strings on the various frets. Because of this modification the Santoor has gained a wider range of expressiveness and has now made the grade as a solo instrument on the concert platform. The five different Ragas are collected together unusually for their being played on santoor, and also according to their most appropriate time of the day, giving a passage through evening and night. Indian classical music is based on the concept of ragas; a melodic scale based system, and within which with groups of ragas based on same parent scales form the thaats. The various ascending and descending scales derived from the music notes create ragas, which evoke a mood, or emotion related to different times of the day and in some cases different seasons of the year. Underlying these ragas, there is a concept of rasas that represent the emotions evoked by the raga. So we have ragas played in a time cycle from dawn through the late night. There is a relationship between the time of the day represented in the raga and the emotion attached to it. The music on this album captures the flow of time as manifest in the splendid selection of ragas, with Marwa performed at sunset time followed here by a selection of ragas played in the night. Within that range there is a shift from serious mood to more romantic connotation as the evening merges into the night phase.

USTAD NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN & USTAD SULTAN KHAN - Pukaar: Echo

It seems nothing is impossible in this technologically advanced world. And the music world is no exception. Technology has brought Ustad Sultan Khan’s dream of singing together with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan alive. Ustad Sultan Khan singing together with the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? A mere pipe dream? No way. And the proof is Pukaar, the new album which uses ground breaking technology to bring together two of the world’s greatest musicians. It was Ustad Sultan Khan’s (a renowned exponent of the Sarangi) lifelong dream to sing and play his instrument along with Nusrat, one of the leading singers of Sufi music.  They even met a couple of times when Nusrat was alive but were not destined to perform onstage together. Sultan was a great fan of Nusrat’s singing, while Nusrat reciprocated that by attending many of Sultan’s concerts. Sadly, Nusrat passed away in 1997 and it seemed like Sultan’s dream had collapsed. Thanks to technology, it has been realized. Before recording for this one-of-a-kind album, Sultan Khan listened to the recordings of the great Sufi master and felt that he could play the Sarangi and sing with the maestro. However, he was still hesitant to undertake such a venture since it could appear that he was trying to spoil the original version. Many renowned musicians encouraged Sultan to take up the project. Thus, Pukaar (The Call) was born.  Pukaar is indeed a different project – the cover of the album describes it as separated by time, space, life and death. Previously, there have been remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s songs, but only Pukaar features a classical instrument and a voice with Nusrat’s Qawwali. Qawwali, which literally means ‘utterance’ in Arabic, was the music of the Muslim mystics, known as the Sufis. Sultan Khan has added a number of verses together with the Sarangi, giving Pukaar special Bhakti touch. During the medieval period, the Bhakti Movement in Hindi poetry originated as a protest against religion, which stressed only upon the scriptures. Both the Sufi and Bhakti movements shared common features including that of a loving and benevolent God rather than a cruel one. It is noteworthy that while Bhakti Bhajans sing the praise of the Sufis, many Qawwali sing about the love of Lord Krishna and Radha. The 19th century saw the Sarangi replaced by the Harmonium, which did not require frequent retuning like the former. Since this process continued into the 20th century, the Sarangi almost disappeared. Thankfully, the latter half of the 20th century saw the revival of the unique music instrument.  Sound engineers in London and Mumbai have made sure that the original rendering of Nusrat is not lost. On the contrary, Sultan’s Sarangi matches the beauty of Qawwali in an awesome manner. One may even feel that both men sat together and sang this composition. Sultan Khan has added verses and improvised Nusrat’s traditional lines from poets like Khusrau. The magicians (recording engineers) of this album are Kulhit Bhamra, Salim and Suleiman Merchant.  In conclusion, Sultan opines that he has tried not to upstage Nusrat in any way. It is more of raga rang (exploring a raga) rather than raga jung (ragas battling each other). More importantly, it is the realization of his personal dream. On both counts, Pukaar is a great success. Ustad Shujaat Khan stands at the head of a long line of master musicians and is today's leading proponent of the Imdadkhani gharana (tradition) of sitar playing. Diga Rhythm Band

During a lull in activities with the Grateful Dead, percussionist and ethnomusicologist Mickey Hart joined with tabla player, Zakir Hussain, son of longtime Ravi Shankar accompanist, Alla Rakha, and students of the Ali Akbar College of Music to form the heavily percussive Diga Rhythm Band in 1975. Recording their sole album, Diga, in Hart's barn/studio in Novato, California, the 11-piece group was augmented by Jerry Garcia on guitar and Jim McPherson, Kathy McDonald and David Freiberg on vocals. One tune on the album, "Happiness Is Drumming (Fire on the Mountain) went on to be a staple at concerts by the Grateful Dead, the Other Ones and Hart's Planet Drum.

Formed as the Tal Vadya Rhythm Band in 1973, the group was renamed the Diga Rhythm Band following Hart's arrival two years later.

Hart severed his connection with the group after returning his focus to a re-energized Grateful Dead in 1976. He has continued to collaborate with Hussain, a charter member of Planet Drum. Other Diga Rhythm Band members who have remained active include tabla player Tor Dietrichson, who signed a solo contract with Global Pacific, and marimba player Jim Loveless, vibes player Ray Spiegel and duggi tarang and nal player Arshad Syed, who joined multi-ethnic fusion group, Ancient Future in 1993.
