Two master percussionists from different generations coming together for a magnificent jam session! The legendary Tata Guines, regarded by many as the most influential tumbador of all times, and the brilliant Miguel "Anga" Diaz, regarded by many as Cuba's finest younger generation tumbador and the heir to Tata's throne, come together and create percussive fireworks! Great arrangements by another brilliant young lion of Cuban jazz, Orlando "Maraca" Valle, and a phenomenol supporting cast of musicians and vocalists from both the older and younger generations of Cuban music. Just listen to the power and technique of the opening conga solo intros by both Tata and then Anga, or Anga's beautiful bata work on the jazzy composition "Anga." Great music for listening or dancing!

Shankar - Soul Searcher (1990)
Shankar's breathtaking violin melodies
Though rooted in the traditions of North Indian classical music, this album adds a subtle modern twist that makes it more digestible to Western ears. Soul Searcher consists of one 50-minute track that swells and recedes, evolving into an epic composition of almost otherworldly beauty. The music combines all the common elements of traditional Indian music -- syncopated tabla rhythms, droning tamboura, dazzling vocals -- with Shankar's breathtaking violin melodies, then adds keyboards courtesy of Peter Gabriel, who featured the violinist's talents prominently on Passion. Indian music has always had an influence over Western rock & roll bands, from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Monster Magnet, and Soul Searcher is a wonderfully accessible introduction for newcomers looking to delve into the genre.

The Enchanting Violin Of Dr. N. Rajam (2003)
Violin was the first Western instrument to be adopted for playing Carnatic Music. Around 1800 AD., Balaswami Dikshitar, the younger brother of Muthuswami Dikshitar learnt the playing of violin from a band master aat Fort St Georgein Chennai (Madras), India. He first learnt western music and later adopted the instrument to play Carnatic music. The technique of playing the violin was perfected to such an extent that it became an indispensable accompaniment to Carnatic Vocal and instrumental music.
Dr. N. Rajam takes credit for introducing the violin not only as a solo instrument but also as an accompanying instrument for vocal and instrumental music in the Hindustani tradition. Oriental Records Inc. is privileged to present the first solo recording of Dr. N. Rajam accompanied by her daughter and the world renowned tabla maestro, Zakir Hussain.

Richard Robbins & Zakir Hussain - The Mystic Masseur (2001)
The tradition of Indian percussion has been revolutionalized by tabla player Zakir Hussain. The son of Ustad Allah Rakha, the long time collaborator of Ravi Shankar, Hussain has inherited his father's quest for bringing the music of India to the international stage. His recording credits include albums with George Harrison, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Jack Bruce, Tito Puente, Pharoah Saunders, Billy Cobham, the Hong Kong Symphony and the New Orleans Symphony. His work with Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead have included performances and albums with the Diga Rhythm Band and Planet Drum. Hussain joined with British guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian violinist L. Shankar to form the east-meets-west supergroup, Shakti, in 1975. Although the group disbanded in 1978, they reunited to tour as Remember Shakti in 1998. Hussain has been equally successful as a bandleader. During the 1980s, he toured with Zakir Hussain's Rhythm Experience. His debut solo album, Making Music, released in 1987, was called "one of the most inspired East-West fusion albums ever recorded". In 1992, Hussain launched a record label, Monument Records, that focused on Indian music. A lengthy list of awards have been bestowed upon Hussain throughout his career. In 1988, he became the youngest percussionist to be awarded the title "Padma Shri" by the Indian government. Two years later, he recieved the Indo-Ameican award in tribute to his contributions to furthering relations between the United States and India. Planet Drum, an album co-produced with Hart in 1992, received a Grammy for "best world music album", a NARM Indie Best Seller award and won the Downbeat Critics Poll for "Best world music album". Still a youngster when he began to attract attention with his virtuosic playing, Hussain began his musical career at the age of seven and was touring by the age of twelve. In 1970, he made his American debut as accompanist for Ravi Shankar. Three years later, he became the leader of the Tal Vadya Rhythm Band. The group subsequently evolved into the Diga Rhythm Band. In 1976, the band collaborated on a self-titled album with Mickey Hart. Hussain has performed on the soundtracks of numerous films including Apocalypse Now!, In Custody and Little Buddha. At the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, he was nominated for an award as composer and music director of the film, Heat And Dust.

Tejendra Narayan Majumdar - Raga Ahiri (2001)
Tejendra Narayan Majumdar has created a superb body of recordings since his emergence in the early '80s as one of the new generation of Indian classical musicians. Since that time, he has become one of the top performers on the sarod in this genre of music. Like many other classical Indian musicians, he began to study quite early in life. His first teacher was his grandfather and when he wore the old man out then his father took over. But the strongest of educational relationships was forged when he began studying with acknowledged sarod master Ustad Bahadur Khan, the nephew of Indian musical genius Alauddin Khan. Majumdar studied with Khan for 18 years, during which time he grabbed first place in the All India Radio competition in 1981. Further honors included a presidential gold medal. When his teacher died in 1989, Majumdar continued his studies with Ajay Sinha Roy, and then was accepted as a disciple by one of the great Indian instrumentalists, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, with whom he has continued to study. Majumdar performs in his repertoire a combination of pieces from the dhrupad, tantrakari, and gayaki styles of music. He has performed at most of the major concert venues, as well as touring in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His New York debut took place along with sitarist Manilal Nag in 1994 in a program at the New School. Majumdar works with many first class tabla players accompanying him, among them Pandit Kishan Maharah, Sankar Ghosh, Pandit Swqapan Chaudbury, Anindo Chatterjee, and Ustad Zakir Hussain. Critics are usually thrilled with Majumdar's performances; he has even been compared to Beethoven.

Lalgudi G. Jayaraman - Violin - In Concert (1995)
One of the most remarkable of the Southern Indian violin players. Born in 1930, he studied initially with his father, V.R. Gopala Iyer. By the age of 12, he had advanced to accompanying other musicians. In 1965 at the Edinburgh Festival he so impressed Yehudi Menuhin that the maestro presented him with his own violin. Jayaraman is a soloist, accompanist -- for example, for the classical vocalist Maharajapuram Santhanam -- and composer. He recorded a very interesting jugalbandi album with the Hindustani sarod player Amjad Ali Khan called South Meets North (G/ECSD 2932) in 1983 which deserves a CD reissue. On it they perform "Bhapali" ("Mohanam") and "Malkauns" ("Hindolam"). Other releases by him are to be found on AVM, Kaveri and Oriental. ~ Ken Hunt, Rovi

Re-Orient - Baluji Shrivastav
Like an extended jam session post-Coltrane, this album fuses Indian sounds primarily with a saxophone in a relatively free manner. Baluji Shrivastav has been around the fusion scenes of London for some time, and with Re-Orient, aka Jazz Orient, ... Full Descriptionhe's been one of the go-to performers for ARC Records when some contemporary Indian is called for. Here, they fuse jazz and Indian music, along with elements from Middle Eastern music (Hossam Ramzy provides some Egyptian percussion throughout that often mirrors the Indian percussion). Guy Barker and Andy Shappard provide the brass for the fusion, always capably adding in the accentuation needed for the piece at hand. With the palette of sound roving from genre to genre rather often throughout the album, the overall effect is a piece of nice ambient music. It never gets too terribly daring, but it never quite falls flat either (even the elevator music of "The Seven Wonders" comes off as nostalgic exotica more than kitsch). Worth a listen for fans of jazz fusion in a less serious tone than the old John McLaughlin recordings.

Great Jazz Trio - Flowers for lady day (1991)
Personnel:Hank Jones — piano
Roy Haynes — drums
George Mraz — bass
About this title:
When you name your group the Great Jazz Trio, you generally run the risk of being called arrogant and had better have a lot to back it up. But if your trio consists of pianist Hank Jones, drummer Roy Haynes and bassist George Mraz, that name isn't an example of arrogance or conceit--it's a statement of fact. Forming a very cohesive trio, Jones, Haynes and Mraz pay tribute to Billie Holiday on Flowers for Lady Day. This 1991 session finds the veteran improvisers embracing mostly songs that Holiday recorded, including "Lover Man" and "Don't Explain"--both of which she defined. However, you won't hear "Gloomy Sunday," "My Man," "Good Morning, Heartache," "Strange Fruit" or "God Bless the Child" on this CD--most of the other songs are standards that Holiday recorded but didn't necessarily define. "I'm A Fool to Want You," for example, was defined by Frank Sinatra--and while Lady Day recorded a superb hit version of "Easy Living" in 1937, her version wasn't the only famous one. Nonetheless, the Great Jazz Trio's affection for Holiday's legacy comes through loud and clear. Post-swing pianism doesn't get much more lyrical and melodic than Jones, and his interpretations of melodies that Holiday embraced are every bit as rewarding as one would expect. Flowers for Lady Day is easily recommended to Holiday and Jones fans alike. Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

The Atlantics - Point Zero Backing Tracks (2010)
The Atlantics are firing again with a great new cd featuring 13 brand new compositions, plus a fabulous version of the TV Classic HAWAII Five-O.
The Atlantics:One of the greatest instrumental surf groups did not even hail from America. The Atlantics, despite their name, were an Australian combo who not only emulated the sound of California surf music, but ranked among its very best practitioners. Featuring a reverb-heavy, extremely "wet" sound, the Atlantics attacked original material, standards, and movie themes with a nervy blend of precision and over-the-top intensity. As in Dick Dale's music, touches of Middle Eastern influences can be detected in the rhythms of melodies (some members of the group claimed Greek and Egyptian heritage). Their second single, "Bombora," went to the top of the Australian charts in 1963, and the follow-up, "The Crusher," was also a big hit. But Beatlemania spelled commercial death for the Atlantics, as it did for U.S. surf combos, in 1964 and 1965. After several albums and a few more equally fine instrumental singles, the Atlantics became a vocal group in the last half of the '60s, but are most renowned for their instrumental recordings.

VA - Arpa Paraguaya - Personal Collection
VA - Arpa Paraguaya - Personal Collection
Brilliant and joyful traditional music from Paraguay, played by the best Indian Harp players. Enjoy 20 tunes, mostly traditional, but also some familiar western songs arranged for harp, selected from many albums.
The Indian Harp was introduced into the South American continent by Spanish colonizers and has become widely used in popular music, especially in Paraguay. It is quite a large instrument, similar in shape to European harps. It has 36 strings and its range is usually 5 octaves. Its sounding case, without pedals, is longer (at the base in particular) and is held up by two small props, so that the instrument is almost horizontal when played seated. Despite its size, this instrument is portable: in processions, the musician holds the harp head down and plays it as he moves around.
The Indian Harp of Paraguay - The Guarani people and their music
Of all the forms that give character to a people, none is more authentic than that of music. It is the spiritual symbol of the race. It is the country itself that is evoked: the strange noise of its forests and rivers. The sweet musical harmony introduced by the songs of birds, and tha untamed beauty of its women. All this, sorrow and joy, is expressed by the indian harp. It recalls all that is dear in life, emotion, tenderness. Feelings pulsate in the gentle sonority of its melodies. The harp, the national instrument of Paraguay, is Guarani feeling expressed in music, in sublime harmony.
And the song goes:
Guarani Indian harp
Of remarkable arpeggios
Of telluric color
You are the melodious awakening
Of a great race
Of a glorious past
And a promising present.
The Paraguayan people is a homogenous one, proud of its race, deeply marked by its Guarani past. The Guarani Indians are members of one of the most extraordinary lineages of the New World. They were often warriors and conquerors, added to which they have a spirit of adventure and work. In this way, they succeeded in developing and extending their lands over a great part of Central and Southern America, by they did not construct an empire like the Aztecs or the Incas. They formed a vast grouping of peoples, united by bonds of political order, ancient social, religious and linguistic traditions. They were known by various names, like Caraives or Carives, in the Guianas, the west Indies and in the north of South America, as the Tupi-Guarani in Brazil, and finally as Guaranis in Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. All these peoples considered themselves as members of a single ethnic group, as they still do to this day. Unity of language which was, and still is, deeprooted, was the most vigorous cultural expression of the social and spiritual unity of the immense Guarani race. They left no documents, but posterity has inherited their language whixh is as gentle as it is expressive and musical. Everything is in the language: civilisation, history, wisdom, morality, a conception of the world genious and soul. The Guarani becharms with his music. His language is also poetic and philosophical. To this day, in Paraguay, Guarani is the national language.

Zoot Sims - Zoot Sims And The Gershwin Brothers (2003)
ohn Haley "Zoot" Sims (October 29, 1925 - March 23, 1985) was an American jazz saxophonist, playing mainly tenor and soprano. He was born in Inglewood, California. Growing up in a vaudeville family, Sims learned to play both drums and clarinet at an early age. His father was a vaudeville hoofer, and Sims prided himself on remembering many of the steps his father taught him.
Following in the footsteps of Lester Young, Sims developed into an innovative tenor saxophonist. Throughout his career, he played with renowned bands, including Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, and Buddy Rich. Sims was also one of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers", and he was known among his peers as one of the strongest swingers in the field. He frequently led his own combos and sometimes toured with his friend Gerry Mulligan's sextet, and later with Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band.

Onmyo-za - Houyoku-Rindou (2003) [Japan, KICS-1994]
Onmyo-za is a band that is difficult to categorize. The band members themselves introduce their music as "Yokai Heavy Metal," with yokai (creatures from Japanese folklore) being the subject matter for many of their songs. This however, does not give full scope to the wide range of styles that the band performs, including pop, rock, ballads and their own special matsuri (traditional Japanese festival) style compositions that end every concert performance. Admittedly their music is deeply influenced by orthodox heavy metal, but there are also many aspects of traditional Japanese music woven throughout their compositions... Tracklist: 01. Quadro Nuevo - Cine Passion (2000)
“ | Buenos Aires, Argentina has often been described as "the most European city in Latin America" (with Montevideo, Uruguay running a close second). So considering that tango originated in such a Europe-influenced city, it isn't surprising that it made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe -- which has some fine tango groups. One of them is Quadro Nuevo, a Germany-based outfit that has been combining tango with a variety of European influences. Of course, tango had European influences to begin with, but with Quadro Nuevo, that passion for different types of European music is even more evident and even more overt. And there is certainly an abundance of European influences on Cinй Passion, a 2000 recording that finds the group putting its spin on songs from European and American movies. Tango is combined with everything from Italian music on "Un' Ora Sola Ti Vorrei" (from the Billy Wilder movie Avanti) to French chanson on "Plus Fort Que Nous" (from the 1966 French film Un Homme et une Femme, aka A Man and a Woman) to Spanish flamenco on Paco de Lucнa melodies that were used in the 1984 thriller The Hit. Quadro Nuevo acknowledge tango's pre-Astor Piazzolla era with their thoughtful arrangement of singer Carlos Gardel's theme from the 1935 movie El Dнa Que Me Quieras -- a theme that was revived 71 years later in 2006, when Penelope Cruz performed the song in Spanish director Pedro Almodуvar's Volver. However, Quadro Nuevo don't use a vocalist, and they don't perform "El Dнa Que Me Quieras" in a 1930s-like fashion; their instrumental version has a strong Piazzolla influence (when Gardel died in 1935, Piazzolla was only 14 and had yet to become well known). Full of surprises, Cinй Passion is not only excellent, it is also one of Quadro Nuevo's most essential albums. |

VA - The Greatest Songs Ever: Middle East (2006)
Built on an incredible legacy of civilizations that date back to ancient times, the Middle East is where science, maths, written language, Judaism, Christianity and Islam were born. It is also home to a long tradition of music and dance that permeates all aspects of life in the region. Musical styles in this diverse region include classical, folk, modern and pop. Its uniqueness can be found in the exotic and complicated sounds that fall within each category. As well as the violin and clarinet, traditional instruments used in Middle Eastern music include the saz and oud (lutes), the riqq (tambourine), the darbuka (a hand drum), the nay (a flute) and the kanun (a stringed zither).

Amalia Rodrigues y Don Byas - Encontro (1988)
An excellent intersection between fado and jazz. The greatest fadista of the century meets US jazz sax player Don Byas. The meeting took place at 1968 in Lisbon but the LP didn't appear but after 5 years, at 1973. The reason? Biding fado to jazz might seem pretentious and confusing to the public. So that was the first and last trial. It is this fact that makes this album a "samplo uniquo". Enjoy.
